What Insurance Do You Need to Rent an Exotic Car in Michigan?
To rent an exotic car in Michigan you need your own auto insurance, and it has to actually cover the rental car you are driving. Having a policy is not the same as having the right coverage.
This guide explains how Michigan no-fault insurance applies to a rental, where most people's coverage falls short on a high-value car, why a credit card usually will not fill the gap, and exactly what to ask your agent before you book.

The basics
How Michigan Car Insurance Applies to a Rental
Michigan is a no-fault state. Every Michigan auto policy includes three required parts: personal injury protection (PIP) for your own medical costs, property protection insurance (PPI) for damage your car does to other people's property in Michigan, such as buildings and properly parked cars, and liability coverage if you injure someone or are sued.
Those required parts protect people and property around the car. None of them pays to repair the rental car itself. That is the job of collision and comprehensive coverage, which are optional in Michigan. On an exotic, that is the part that matters most.
| Coverage | What it pays for on a rental |
|---|---|
| Personal injury protection (PIP) | Your medical expenses and certain related costs after a crash, at the PIP level you chose on your policy. |
| Property protection (PPI) | Damage the car you are driving causes to other people's property in Michigan, such as buildings, fences and properly parked cars. |
| Liability | Injuries you cause to others, and your legal defense. Higher limits protect you better when you are driving a car worth far more than your own. |
| Collision | Damage to the rental car from a crash. Optional in Michigan, and it comes in limited, standard and broad forms that pay very differently. |
| Comprehensive | Theft, vandalism, hail, fire, flood and hitting an animal. Also optional. |
The fine print
Where Coverage Falls Short on an Exotic
Many personal policies extend some coverage to a rental car. The question is whether that coverage is big enough and broad enough for a Corvette or a Cadillac Escalade Platinum. These are the gaps that catch people most often.
No collision on your policy
If you only carry the required Michigan coverages, nothing on your policy pays to repair a rental after a crash. You would owe the damage yourself.
Limited collision
Michigan's limited collision pays only when you are not more than 50% at fault. Standard and broad form collision pay whoever is at fault, so check which one you have.
Value limits
Some policies cap rental coverage at the value of the car you insure, or exclude high-value and exotic vehicles entirely. A $25,000 sedan policy may not stretch to a $100,000 car.
Vehicle type exclusions
Certain policies exclude sports, luxury or "exotic" vehicles by name or by value. The only way to know is to ask your insurer about the exact vehicle.
Loss of use and fees
When a rental is being repaired it cannot be rented. Ask whether your policy pays loss of use, diminished value and towing, or whether those fall to you.
Your deductible
Even with good coverage, your deductible applies. Know the number before you drive, and remember the security deposit is a separate hold, not insurance.
Credit cards
Will Your Credit Card Cover an Exotic Rental?
Usually not. Credit card rental benefits commonly exclude exotic, high-value and some luxury vehicles, often by a price limit or a list of makes. Many card benefits are also secondary, meaning they only pay after your own insurance, and they typically do not include liability at all.
If you plan to rely on a card, read your card's guide to benefits for the vehicle exclusions and call the benefits administrator with the exact year, make and model. Get the answer in writing. Even when a card helps with damage, you still need your own auto policy for liability and Michigan's required coverages.
Call your agent
Six Questions to Ask Before You Book
A five-minute call to your insurance agent answers almost everything. Have the rental vehicle's year, make and model and your rental dates ready, then ask:
- Does my policy extend to a rental car I drive? Some policies cover rentals automatically, some only for short periods or specific uses.
- Do my collision and comprehensive coverages apply to this specific vehicle?Name the car. Ask about any value limit or exotic vehicle exclusion.
- Which collision do I have: limited, standard or broad form? And what is my deductible?
- What are my liability limits?Consider whether they are high enough when you are driving a car worth much more than your own.
- Are loss of use, diminished value and towing covered? These are real costs after a crash on a rental.
- Can you send proof of coverage for this rental?A declarations page or written confirmation speeds up approval.
At Corsa Nero
How Insurance Approval Works With Us
Every approved driver must have qualifying auto insurance that extends the required coverage to the rented vehicle. Coverage is confirmed before the car is released, and an insurance card alone does not complete approval.
- 01
Send your details
Tell us the vehicle and dates you want, then share your license and insurance information.
- 02
We verify coverage
Policy status and applicable coverage are verified with your insurer or an approved verification provider. We may ask for more documents.
- 03
Review and book
Once approved, you receive the full quote and rental agreement. Nothing is confirmed until documents, signatures and payment are complete.
If your current policy does not qualify, ask your insurer whether coverage can be added for the specific rental. Every additional driver goes through the same license and insurance review. See the full rental requirements.

Rental Insurance Questions
The questions renters ask most often.
Do I need my own insurance to rent an exotic car in Michigan?
Yes. At Corsa Nero every driver needs qualifying personal auto insurance that extends to the rental vehicle, and it is verified before handoff.
Is Michigan's minimum required insurance enough?
Usually not for damage to the rental. The required coverages protect people and other property, but they do not pay to repair the car you are driving. For that you need collision and comprehensive that apply to the rental.
Does my credit card cover an exotic car rental?
Often not. Many card benefits exclude exotic or high-value vehicles and do not include liability. Check your card's guide to benefits for the exact vehicle before relying on it.
Is the security deposit a form of insurance?
No. The deposit is a refundable hold for documented costs such as fuel, tolls and cleaning. It does not replace insurance. Read how security deposits work.
Can a friend drive the car on my insurance?
Only drivers approved in advance and named in the rental agreement may drive. Each additional driver must pass the same license and insurance review.
What happens if I have an accident?
Make sure everyone is safe, call the police if needed, and contact Corsa Nero right away. Your rental agreement explains the steps, and your insurer handles the claim under your policy.
I'm from out of state. Can I still rent?
Possibly. Your policy must extend the required coverage to a rental driven in Michigan. Ask your insurer, and contact us with your details so we can confirm before you book.
